Disinfect frequently. Help break the chain of infection.

This International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW), we're helping healthcare teams take on their Microbe Mission: identify key microbes, spot the moments they spread, and disinfect the surfaces that matter to break the chain of infection.

Meet the microbes. Know the moments that matter. Stop them before they spread.

Meet the microbes!

Different microbes spread and survive in different ways. Get to know the microbes behind some of the most challenging healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and discover how you can help stop them before they spread.

C.auris

C. auris

I am a multidrug-resistant fungus that causes serious healthcare-associated infections with increasingly high global mortality rates.

MRSA

MRSA

I am a drug-resistant bacterium that usually lives harmlessly on the skin or in the nose. But if I enter the body through broken skin or invasive procedures, I can cause serious bloodstream, lung or surgical-site infections. Because I resist several antibiotics, I am harder to treat.

VRE

VRE

I'm a highly transmissible, multidrug-resistant bacteria found in the gut, known to cause serious healthcare-associated infections due to my resistance to the antibiotic, vancomycin.

CPE

CPE

We are a family of multidrug-resistant bacteria that harmlessly colonise the gut. If we spread to other parts of the body we can cause infections. We produce enzymes that breakdown some antibiotics making infections difficult to treat.

C.diff

C. diff

I am a spore-forming bacteria that lives harmlessly in the intestines. I produce toxins that can damage the bowel lining and kill ‘good’ gut bacteria, causing serious infections, especially after recent antibiotic use.
