Do your wipes contain plastic?
Most of our Clinell branded wipes are made from a mixture of natural and synthetically-derived fibres. Patient safety will always be our number one priority and, currently, adding some synthetic fibres makes things safer for patients. The synthetic fibres stop the disinfectant getting trapped in the wipe itself, making sure you can kill the bacteria and viruses in question. However, we are delighted to have launched Clinell Biodegradable Surface Wipes, and our Research & Development team are actively developing other plastic-free wipes across our range
What is the ‘Single Use Plastics Directive'?
The Single-Use Plastics Directive is a welcome piece of European Legislation aimed at reducing waste in the marine environment. The majority of GAMA's wipe products are either class II medical devices, environmental decontamination products, or designed for direct contact with patients and/or healthcare workers. As such, they should be disposed of via clinical waste (according to local hospital policy). We work with healthcare organisations to educate front-line staff on the proper waste-streams for our products. In doing so, we prevent our products ending up in the marine environment.
Are your wipes biodegradable?
Clinell plastic-free wipes are biodegradable and certified against ASTM D5511-18 standards, meaning they have been proved to decompose in active landfill conditions. Our Research & Development team are actively researching new wipe materials and technologies that will allow us to offer further plastic-free products without compromising safety.
Why don’t you state on your pack that your wipes contain plastic?
Most of our wipe products are registered class II medical devices, meaning what appears (and what does not appear) on our packaging is highly regulated. The European Commission is currently overhauling current guidelines and until these new guidelines are published, it's unclear how the system of marking will work. Once these details have been finalised, we will update our packaging.
How should Clinell Universal Wipes be disposed of?
Our products should always be disposed of according to local and trust regulations. For our medical device products, we work with healthcare organisations to educate front-line staff on the proper way to dispose of them. The Clinell range of products are not designed to be flushed, and the ‘do not flush’ logo can be found on our packaging. For the majority of professional users, our wipes should be disposed of via clinical or infectious waste. Always refer to local policy.
Is your packaging recyclable?
The outer boxes of all GAMA products are made from fully recyclable cardboard, and our plastic buckets and tubs are 100% Polypropylene. These are both recyclable as per local policy. We're currently developing ways to make our flow-wrap packaging recyclable without adversely affecting the stability of our products.
